Ann Richards: The late Texas governor and former junior high teacher spent her early political career campaigning for the Equal Rights Amendment. She became Texas' first female elected as governor and became more popular than presidential nominee Michael Dukakis at the 1988 Democratic National Convention, where she gave a speech condemning opponent George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan: "Poor George, he can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth."
